Forests and wetlands teem with wildlife. Red squirrels and red kites are still regularly seen in this area.

Orchardton Tower, the only round house in Scotland, and dating back to the mid 15th Century, is only ten minutes drive from Douglas House. Free entry and you can climb to the top, with wonderful views all round.

Five minutes by car takes you to Threave Castle, where you need to ring the bell for the boatman to take you across to visit this 14th Century ruined tower. Surrounded by wetlands the area is a well known wildfowl refuge and is ideal for birdwatching.

The ever changing atmosphere of the Solway coast offers fascinating beach and mud flat exploration only fifteen minutes drive from Douglas House.

You don't necessarily have to tackle the internationally renowned mountain biking routes as Dumfries and Galloway offers cycling for softies on the tracks, trails and quiet country lanes around Castle Douglas.
